“Roy’s Joys,” set to recordings by Roy Eldridge, is abundant with layers of vernacular dance, ballet and modern — everything to grow a company of dancers, and grow they did under Battle. That mix of new and the unexpected old was also important in the bigger picture of dance — “Roy’s Joys” (1997) was granted a second, much-needed life at Ailey. Alvin Ailey studied with Martha Graham; Taylor was in her company. I’ll never forget the invigorating sight of Ailey dancers performing Taylor’s “Arden Court,” a bold, crisp example of showing them, as he said, in new ways. But Battle branched out, and as he dusted off the Ailey company, he led it into the 21st century with a public persona that was as fresh as his artistic agenda.

The economist Selma Hepp says home prices in some areas are rising because of limited inventory. The US housing market started off on a solid footing this year as home prices rose. “Parade” speaks to historical antisemitism and mob violence, and it forces us to see how antisemitism and racism are inextricably linked, underscoring how the pursuit of justice fails in a broken judicial system. The only other person the police considered making a suspect in the murder was a Black man, the night watchman of the pencil factory. In the show, the prosecutor on the case has been instructed to deliver a quick conviction, and he casually states that hanging a Black man “ain’t enough this time. We gotta do better.” He knows that pinning the crime on a Jewish man will cast the outcome in a different light than pinning it on a Black man: He can knock the Jewish man down a peg, whereas the Black man’s social status has no farther to fall. A Black woman and a Jewish woman, undone by the same system, having a picnic.

For others, red hair is not about transforming but rather returning to their roots. “She’s got a strong personality, and that’s something I really associate with red,” Aboah says. “It’s funny that it’s now become so trendy.” In the model’s mind, red hair is as much an attitude as it is a look. Whitley uses Ruby color-depositing shampoo to keep her hair bright and, as a result, has had to invest in red towels and black bedsheets. “Be prepared for the red to go everywhere: your life, your fashion, your identity,” she says.

CNN —After stepping down as leader of New Zealand earlier this year, Jacinda Ardern has revealed that she is swapping the rough and tumble of politics for a stint of quiet reflection within academia overseas, heading to Harvard University this fall under two fellowships. Tigers have personality traits similar to extroversion and introversion in humans, researchers have found. Tigers that score higher on "majesty" eat more, have higher group status and mate more often. Tigers that scored for "majesty" were highly rated on words such as dignified, confident, and fierce and placed low on terms like withdrawn oterms feeble. "Steadiness" in tigers was associated with high ratings for words like friendly, gentle, and loving but ranked low for words such as aggressive or cruel. Abdellaoui told The Guardian that the words were all initially Chinese, and some of their meanings might be harder to translate.

New York CNN —General Motors is cutting an unspecified number of white-collar jobs globally, part of its announced efforts to slash costs to remain competitive in the shift to electric vehicles. GM has 58,000 salaried US-based staff and 46,000 US unionized hourly workers, making up the majority of its 167,000 employees worldwide. GM has said it will invest $35 billion between now and 2025 in the shift to EVs. Both Ford (F) and GM (GM) face contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers union this fall on new labor deals for their US hourly workers. The union went on strike at GM (GM) for six weeks in 2019 before reaching a deal on its current contract.
